Binding 13 isn’t just a high school romance. It’s a story about learning that safety can exist after years of believing the world is only capable of hurting you. Chloe Walsh takes familiar YA romance elements and grounds them in a deeply emotional exploration of trauma, friendship, and first love.

Johnny Kavanagh could have easily been written as the stereotypical golden-boy athlete. Instead, he’s remarkably gentle. From the moment he accidentally hits Shannon with a rugby ball and softly asks, “Shannon… like the river?”, he treats her with a tenderness that never feels performative. He notices the things everyone else overlooks: the oversized clothes, the constant fear, the instinct to make herself invisible. Rather than demanding her trust, he earns it one quiet act of kindness at a time.

Shannon’s story broke my heart. She arrives at Tommen hoping for a fresh start after relentless bullying, only to discover that escaping one nightmare doesn’t erase another waiting for her at home. Watching her carry so much pain while still worrying more about her younger brothers than herself made every small victory feel enormous. She deserved peace long before she ever met Johnny.

One of my favorite parts of the novel is how Johnny’s world slowly becomes Shannon’s world. Claire’s friendship, Gibsie’s humor, Joey’s fierce love for his siblings, and Johnny’s close-knit circle create something Shannon has rarely experienced: a place where she doesn’t have to survive alone. The found-family aspect feels just as important as the romance itself.

The ending is devastating. Although the escalating violence at home creates an overwhelming sense of dread throughout the novel, I still wasn’t emotionally prepared for Shannon’s hospitalization. It isn’t a cliffhanger designed simply for shock. It’s the culmination of everything Shannon has endured and leaves you desperate to see her finally receive the safety she’s always deserved.

I couldn’t stop with Binding 13. I had to continue because I needed to know that Johnny and Shannon would eventually find the happiness, they’d fought so hard for.

At the same time, Chloe Walsh made me emotionally cautious about the rest of the series. Joey and Aoife’s story especially intimidate me because, after everything Joey carries throughout Shannon’s books, I can’t help feeling their journey may be even more heartbreaking.

Binding 13 is a beautiful reminder that love doesn’t heal trauma overnight. Sometimes it begins with something as simple as someone learning your name, seeing your pain, and refusing to look away.
