Intoxication gave me some of the most conflicting emotions I’ve experienced in a romance. I found myself rooting for the central couple while simultaneously grieving for someone who had done very little wrong. By the end, I was happy for the romance, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that one heart had been left behind.

The story begins with a situation that, on paper, should have been difficult for me to forgive. The cheating happens early, yet surprisingly, I found myself moving past it much faster than I expected. Part of that came from the undeniable connection between the heroine and the father. Their encounters carried a sense of inevitability, almost as if they had stumbled into something neither of them had planned but couldn’t ignore.

It also helped that the father’s marriage was already deeply broken. His wife wasn’t simply distant. She created an environment where the relationship felt emotionally dead long before the romance truly began. That didn’t erase the moral complications, but it made it easier for me to understand why the heroine and the father were drawn to one another.

The emotional center of the novel, however, became Ray.

Ray treated her well. He loved her sincerely. He wasn’t cruel or neglectful, and because of that, his pain became impossible for me to dismiss. Watching him lose not only the woman he loved but also the stability he believed he had was heartbreaking. More than anything, I hated seeing him end up alone again.

That created a fascinating emotional conflict while reading. I genuinely wanted the father and the heroine to succeed because their relationship felt real, but every step toward their happiness reminded me of what Ray was losing. Instead of rooting against either side, I found myself wishing there were a way for everyone to heal.

By the conclusion, the central romance earns its happily ever after, and I understood why it ended the way it did. Still, the ending left me with an unexpected sense of sadness because Ray never receives the same opportunity to rebuild his life. His emotional journey felt unfinished, and I closed the book hoping he would someday find the happiness that had been taken from him.

Intoxication reminded me that not every romance leaves every character whole. Sometimes the happiest ending for one couple still carries genuine heartbreak for someone else, and that emotional complexity is what stayed with me long after I finished the novel.

This may not be the best fit if you need every major character to receive emotional closure. While the central couple earns their happily ever after, I finished the book still wishing Ray had found his own.
