Every romance reader has habits that probably sound ridiculous to people who don’t read romance. We promise ourselves one more chapter. We accidentally download an entire series. We become emotionally attached to fictional families.
We somehow believe our TBR will shrink. This isn’t my biography.
It’s a collection of wonderfully irrational reading habits that made me smile when I finally noticed them.

Fun Facts From My Reading Life
I have a confession. I still believe “just one more chapter” is a perfectly reasonable plan. I’ve been testing that theory for decades. It has never once worked. One chapter quietly becomes five.
Midnight somehow turns into one in the morning. Then I spend the next day wondering why I’m tired, conveniently forgetting that I voluntarily sacrificed sleep because two fictional people hadn’t admitted they were in love yet.

My Reading Life Started Earlier Than Most People Realize
I’ve been reading romance since I was fourteen. Back then, forty to sixty books a year felt like a lot.
Then ebooks entered my life.
Apparently, my reading habits interpreted that as a personal challenge.
Today, I’ve tracked more than 1,580 books and read over 376,000 pages, but those numbers don’t really tell the story.
What they represent are thousands of quiet moments.
Lunch breaks spent reading just one chapter.
Weekends disappearing into an entire series.
Late nights whispering, “I’ll stop after this one.”
I never do.
Apparently… I Have a Type
Actually… Several.
Give me Found Family, and I’m already emotionally invested before everyone has even been introduced.
Mention Fated Mates, and I’m curious.
Tell me there’s a fiercely protective hero with serious “Touch Them & Die” energy…
Now I’m downloading the sample.
For years, I thought I simply liked certain books. Looking back, I realized I was following patterns. Not because the tropes guaranteed I’d love the story. Because they promised the kind of emotional journey I enjoy most. Apparently, my Reader DNA has excellent taste.
Or at least very predictable taste.
☕ My Reading Habits Are Slightly Concerning
My eReader has quietly become one of the most consistent companions in my life. It goes on vacation. It waits patiently in doctor’s offices. It rides in my bag “just in case.” It has accompanied me through airports, coffee shops, and countless evenings curled beneath a blanket.
About 88.5% of my reading now happens on that little device. If I'm honest, I miss the feel of a physical book, I even buy them because I love to look at a beautiful cover, spine and sometimes sprayed edges. I plan bookstores visits at every vacation.
Then I remember my eReader carries hundreds of books and audiobooks without complaining about the weight and allowing me to increase the font size and have a reading light in one... It’s difficult to compete with that.
My ideal vacation looks surprisingly simple, take me to a bookstore with coffee and let me loose to dream of rescuing books that feel alone there.
Fictional Families I’d Happily Join
Some readers fall in love with couples or even have fictional boyfriends (hey! I'm not immune to that). But I apparently fall in love with entire neighborhoods. The families that stay with me aren’t memorable because they’re perfect. They’re memorable because they make me wish someone would save me a seat at dinner to laugh with them.
The Made Marian family made me laugh so much that finishing the series felt strangely emotional. The Wilde Family reminded me why found family stories work every single time. Caroline Peekhan’s Zodiac Academy gave me a world I happily disappeared into for book after book.
Those worlds stopped feeling fictional somewhere along the way.
They simply became places I like visiting again.
Authors Who Keep Stealing My Sleep
Every reader has those authors. The ones who don’t need to convince you anymore. You see their name.
You click “Buy Now.”
Jennifer L. Armentrout became one of those authors after I wandered into the Lux novels and suddenly realized I wanted to read everything she’d written. Some authors earn trust one story at a time.
Eventually, reading them stops feeling like taking a chance.
It feels like coming home.
One Final Confession
After all these years, I’ve realized something. Reading romance isn’t simply one of my hobbies. It’s how I unwind after difficult days. How I recharge. How I laugh. How I cry. How I travel without leaving home.
How I meet people who don’t exist but somehow become unforgettable anyway.
Maybe that’s why I don’t feel embarrassed about any of these confessions. Because I have a feeling I’m not the only reader who’s ever stayed awake too late…
Downloaded the sequel before finishing the first book…
Ignored an already impossible TBR because another recommendation looked irresistible…
Or become completely attached to fictional people.
Romance readers may all have different favorite books.
Different favorite authors.
Different spice levels.
Different comfort reads.
But I think we’re all chasing the same feeling.
Finding that next story that reminds us exactly why we fell in love with reading in the first place.
